So you have just invested in a high quality table for your home, and you want to know how to care for your table properly? The best way to protect and care for your table is by reading the product manual. Whether your table is made of wood, glass, metals like cast iron or a mixture of materials it will normally have different ways for you to care for it based on the material. However, regardless of your table’s composition below are 7 tips to help you provide the best care for your table in order to keep it in great condition.
1. Clean After Each Use
Make sure you clean your table after each use or on a regular basis. The best way to do this is to wipe down the table surface thoroughly with a soft moist cloth. However, you should always do a pre-test on section that is hidden or is out of sight to make sure that wiping with the moist cloth does not damage the finish. Then you should dry with a soft dry cloth and leave the surface as dry as possible. If your table is made from wood then it should be cleaned like this at least once per week. For glass tables always use a good quality glass cleaner to clean the surface.
2. Dust Regularly
Dust the table carefully and regularly with a soft cloth, if you have a wood table you should follow the grain pattern of the wood when dusting. This will help to remove the everyday abrasive particles from the table’s surface.
3. Get Rid of Water Rings
If you notice water rings on the surface of your table use a warm damp cloth to cover the stain, press down and wipe in the same direction of the grain. Repeat until the ring has been removed, then wipe until dry with a dry cloth.
4. Do Not Place Sharp Objects on the Table
Avoid placing sharp objects on the table and lift and place items instead of sliding them across the table. Both of these actions can cause scratches to the table surface which will make it look old and worn. Plus based on the depth of the scratches you might have to call in a professional to get out these marking. Therefore, it is best for you to avoid these actions all together.
5. Use Coasters and Placemats
Invest in coasters and placemats to help protect the table surface which is vital for maintaining the look and feel. Using coasters with drinks and placemats with food will help to keep all food spills to a minimal as well as help you to minimise the amount of water rings that are formed on your table’s surface.
6. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat Sources
Keep the table out of direct sunlight. As it pertains to wood tables if it is placed in direct sunlight or near other sources of heat like the fireplace, then very soon you will notice signs of drying or discolouration in the exposed areas. Therefore, it is best for you to keep your table away from this to prevent it from bleaching and drying out.
7. Wax and Polish
To protect the wood finish, you should apply a wax or polish to the table every six to twelve months. However, do not apply a wax to your white marble or glass table as it could cause yellowing.
Your table is a beautiful accent to the rest of your fine furniture, and if you want to have years of enjoyment you will have to take proper care of it.
