Jamaica’s Beaches

When it comes to Jamaica’s beaches the choice is all yours. Whether you want white sands, golden sands or beautiful black sandy beaches you will find them in Jamaica. From the fascinating bustling coastal towns to hundreds of miles of beautiful beaches, some of which are serene and secluded. Jamaica has it all. Jamaica’s beaches are regarded as some of the finest if not the best beaches in the Caribbean.

Most of Jamaica’s beaches are very energetic and fun-filled places to visit. The shores are normally packed with sunbathers and swimmers while you can hear some traces of reggae music in the background. However, there are several other beaches that are secluded and quiet if you are looking to relax and unwind while you are in the country. The most popular beaches in Jamaica are located in the resort towns of Montego Bay or “Mo’bay” in St. James, Ochi Rios or “Ochi” in St. Ann, Portland and Negril in Westmoreland. You will be able to find the more secluded, but nonetheless, beautiful beaches in all the other parishes.

In the parish of St. Ann, you will find one of Jamaica’s most beautiful treasures, the Dunns River Falls. This majestic, beautiful and unique beach is where the fresh waters of the river flow over a falls into the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Dunns River is a true phenomenon and is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. This is because it continuously rejuvenates itself from the travertine rock deposits which results in the precipitation of calcium carbonate as the water flows over the falls. You will also be able to find the splendid Turtle Beach, Mallard Beach and the famous James Bond Beach all of which are all great spots to enjoy tasty food, fun activities, and enjoy the warm sun in St. Ann. If you are looking for a beach that offers more privacy and seclusion you can always visit Reggae Beach on the border of the parish or the in-town Island Village Beach.

In St. James, you will find the beautiful and energetic Montego Bay which is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Montego Bay is famous for its Doctor’s Cave and Walter Fletcher Beaches, both of which are really beautiful and has marvelous stretches of white sand. Being a favorite destination for tourists and local alike, you will find that the beaches, there can get very crowded. If you are traveling with children you can visit the Cornwall Beach which has a wide variety of water sporting activities to enjoy.

The areas around Port Antonio in Portland are great places to visit if you want to enjoy great beaches along with natural beauty. In this area, you will find the beautiful Frenchman’s Cove, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world; the rejuvenating San San Beach, and the cobalt blue waters of the Blue Lagoon which was featured in the movie “Blue Lagoon” with Brooke Shields. Nearby you will find the famous Boston Beach which is the best place to go if you want to enjoy authentic Jamaican jerk chicken in Portland.

If you are in Negril you can visit the golden sands of the Seven Mile Beach. At this beach, all you will find is seven miles of beautiful beaches on the west coast which is perfect for both families and adventurers. As you will find that the area promotes a laid-back lifestyle, carefree atmosphere and has several sections that are designated as nudist beaches while the rest is for families to enjoy. Seven Miles features warm aquamarine waters, beautiful coral reefs, and a backdrop of beautiful green palm trees. There are also all sorts of resorts, restaurants, clubs and beach bars where you can relax and enjoy after a day of swimming and sunbathing.

There are also numerous amounts of more laid back and secluded Jamaican beaches in the parishes of St. Elizabeth, St. Catherine, St. Mary, Hanover and St. Thomas. These include beaches like Helshire beach and Forth Clarence beach in St. Catherine and Treasure Beach and Font Hill in St. Elizabeth.
